NONTONNEWS.COM - Badan Meteorologi Klimatologi dan Geofisika (BMKG) mengungkapkan adanya potensi besar terjadinya gempa megathrust di Indonesia, yang dapat memicu tsunami. Prediksi ini mengacu pada dua megathrust besar di Indonesia, yakni Megathrust Selat Sunda dengan magnitudo 8,7 dan Megathrust Mentawai-Siberut dengan magnitudo 8,9.
Menurut Kepala Pusat Gempa Bumi dan Tsunami BMKG, Daryono, kedua megathrust ini sudah lama tidak melepaskan energi, sehingga potensi gempa besar semakin meningkat. "Ilmuwan memperkirakan bahwa tinggal menunggu waktu saja sebelum energi besar tersebut terlepas. Potensi seismic gap di Megathrust Selat Sunda diperkirakan bisa mencapai magnitudo 8,7, sementara di Megathrust Mentawai-Siberut bisa mencapai magnitudo 8,9," ungkapnya.
Dari catatan sejarah, gempa besar terakhir yang tercatat di Megathrust Selat Sunda terjadi pada tahun 1699 dan 1780 dengan magnitudo 8,5. Sementara itu, Megathrust Mentawai-Siberut pernah mengalami gempa dahsyat pada tahun 1797 dengan magnitudo 8,7 dan tahun 1833 dengan magnitudo 8,9. Sudah lebih dari seratus tahun sejak kedua megathrust ini terakhir kali melepaskan energinya, sehingga potensi gempa besar semakin nyata.
Penting bagi masyarakat dan pemerintah untuk waspada terhadap potensi gempa dan tsunami ini. Langkah mitigasi dan kesiapsiagaan perlu ditingkatkan guna mengurangi risiko bencana yang dapat terjadi kapan saja.
